A little about me . . .
Are you desirous of increasing your vital energy?
Learning and practicing authentic Yoga, Meditation, and Ayurveda may be what you've been looking for. These 3 foundational healing sciences offer a holistic approach to revitalizing your sense of well-being.
Health encompasses your whole life and is not simply the absence of disease. Health includes physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Recovering your elements of balance through Yoga, Meditation, and Ayurveda may be what you've been searching for.
We each have a fundamental make-up that constitutes our basic nature. When life becomes out of balance, we have unwelcome tendencies toward dis-ease. By integrating the "technologies" contained in these 3 healing modalities, the imbalances can be gently coaxed back into alignment with greater ease becoming more accessible.
To learn how to balance your elements, a teacher should provide a healing environment to learn and practice. My values include empathy, optimism, and life-long learning so you will receive compassionate support as you learn how to integrate yoga, meditation and Ayurveda in your life.
The mission of Your Elements of Balance is to open the way for your healthy self to thrive (not just survive)!
Come experience the benefits of a balanced life.

Philosophy & Lineage
I was introduced to yoga as a child. Flexibility and balance were valued in my family. I remember my elderly grandfather folding his legs to "perch" on a 12" bar stool and find comfort in that position. Standing on one's head was also accomplishment of my grandmother. As an adolescent, I paged through a paperback with pictures of many postures (asana-s) and was quite fascinated at the way the body could be positioned and curious about being able to swallow a cloth to cleanse the stomach!
Moving ahead 10-15 years, I found myself teaching dance exercise and managing a resort health club with a gorgeous view of Thumb Butte (Prescott) from the room where my instructors and I taught. I invited a Hatha Yoga teacher named Evelyn to teach and it was there I discovered the healing benefits of the asana-s or poses of yoga.
There were many local influences in those early days for me including Sally, Christina, and Rachel. But I hadn't yet examined the philosophy behind yoga. Until the day I finally read a book I had on the shelf for a while: The Tree of Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar. There was something about that book, at that time in my life that struck a chord in me. That was c. 2006.
Since then I have learned from many teachers and pursued self-directed study. From a 9-month-long training to online courses to silent retreats, I have immersed myself in many of the nooks and crannies of these esoteric teachings.
Philosophy
Volumes have been written on yoga philosophy and I make no attempt to codify or re-analyze what is readily available. It has been a very personal journey and I invite you to explore and savor what resonates, letting go of what does not serve you.
I was so entranced with The Tree of Yoga, I shared the volume with my personal trainer at the time. I felt like I was proselytizing but I remember thinking to myself, "if yoga were a religion I would go to that church!"
Like many people, I thought "yoga" was the postures undertaken in a class. I enjoyed the feeling I had after the class: integrated, calm, balanced. It really was a high; one that I don't specifically recall experiencing in other exercise classes or even church. The high was not an altered state but a peaceful, expansive, present state-of-being. I did not recognize that yoga means union and that it is a felt experience.
Coming from background in Christian fundamentalism, even contemplating the Hindu religion was frightening to my "unenlightened" mind. There are over a million gods, for goodness sake! How do I know which one....is the "real" God? Well, I have come a long way in my understanding since then (I'll write about that soon).
Traditional yoga has at its core, the purpose of settling your mind to bring you to deeper awareness of self. Technically, Yoga is the the main title over the various modalities that include 1) postures (asana-s), 2) meditation (dhyana), and 3) health/healing (Ayurveda). In other words, they are all "Yoga".
I choose those 3 to concentrate my personal and public practice because to me they represent spirit, mind, and body: the trifecta of health. My personal sadhana (practice) also includes cleanses (dinacharya), eating for balance (tridosha), mantra recitation, breath work (pranyama), deep relaxation (yoga nidra), and more. You can follow my 2018 Summer Sadhana here soon.
I suppose the primary volume that drives my practice is The Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali, a book of about 200 aphorisms that contain vast amounts of material for contemplation. The Sutra-s expound on self-inquiry as a means to achieve liberation from the mundane aspects of our usual state of mental frenzy. Thinking, thinking, thinking every day (and sometimes night too). Most of our thoughts are the same thoughts we had yesterday. The Sutra-s give instruction on how to quiet the mind: Yogas chitta vritti nirodha (yoga is the progressive quieting of the mind).

Lineage
One of my instructors recently pointed out the value of knowing the lineage (or where the teachings originate) as there are multitudes of styles and teachers. As an example, in a recent course on Yoga Therapy, students were speaking about their varied experiences with Yoga Nidra. The variety of styles described in the discussion was telling. This made an impact on my view of the importance of knowing lineages. My learning and practice experience has been in the Sivanda tradition (Satyananda, Satchidananda, Vishnu Devananda) primarily with influences from Iyengar (Krishnamacharya lineage). I look forward to getting to know your experience with yoga. Keep in touch. Connect with me! |
